The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday urged President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC-led federal government to take immediate action to resolve the nation's worsening food insecurity, which has resulted in hunger and famine.

According to the PDP, over 82.9 million Nigerians can no longer afford their regular meals under Buhari's administration due to the administration's inability to take practical measures to develop and protect the food sector, resulting in extreme food shortages and prices that are out of control of Nigerians.

According to a statement released by the PDP's National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, the country now ranks 98 out of 107 in the Global Hunger Index, with an agonizing food deficit, collapsed buying power, alarming 33.3 percent unemployment, and 22.95 percent food inflation rates, as well as elevated morbidity and mortality rates, due to the APC government's misrule.

“Today, a bag of rice that sold for N8,000 under the PDP now sells for N30,000, a measure of garri and beans that sold for N150 and N250 respectively now sell for N500 and N800, a measure of maize and guinea corn that sold for about N150 now sells for N400, and a kilo of meat that sold for about N800 now sells for about N2,300.

“Our party recognizes that the current food crisis is the product of the APC administration's inability to re-calibrate our agricultural sector and take concrete action to counter crime, insurgency, and banditry in food-producing areas,” the main opposition party said.

“Nigerians recall how the APC administration remained indifferent to calls from our party and well-meaning Nigerians asking it to resolve the intensified violent attacks and killings of farmers and livestock producers by robbers, terrorists, and criminal herders, resulting in the desertion of farms in various parts of our country,” the PDP said.
