No money is kept in accountant general's office - Dr. Joe Abah

Treasury House, Abuja Treasury House, Abuja

The Country Director of the Development Alternatives Incorporated - DAI Nigeria, has informed Nigerians that there is no money in the office of the Accountant General of the federation.

Earlier today, the Accountant General's Office caught fire and MyNigeria.com reported that the Federal Fire Service and men of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) arrived at the scene soon enough to prevent the building from getting totally destroyed by the fire.

Dr.Abah took to Twitter to draw the attention of Nigerians to the safety of those in the building rather than claims of money being burnt.

His statement reads:

"In case you didn’t know, no money is kept in the Office of the Accountant General. Monies are kept in the Central Bank and the OAGF’s electronic data is backed up offsite in one of the states. Don’t worry about #COVID?19 money. Worry instead about the safety of fellow Nigerians"

His comment, however, did little to change the minds of Nigerians who appeared to have little trust for the government.

Some Nigerians, especially on Twitter, feel that the fire was staged to cover-up or get rid of a piece of incriminating evidence.

@lumide0b said, "Obviously only a very very small portion of the public thinks money is stored there. However, for data and back up issues, we wait for official statement. Remember INEC servers suddenly ceased to exist when they were crucially needed. The govt past and present have earned mistrust."

@Cystem001 added that "Let's not conclude until official statements have been made. If snakes and monkeys can't swallow millions in this country, anything can happen. It's Nigeria we are talking about ooo."

@krativity "When we have the most irresponsible opposition you can have anywhere in the world what do you expect? Everything here is PDP & APC all the time.
The nat. secretary of PDP has run to twitter to rant about the money donated for covid19."

@henry_fabulous added, "Secondly please allow Nigerians to air the views on issues regarding national development and don't teach us how to think properly please sir. rather teach them on governance on how to be accountable cos of there were no one would be insinuating such"
