The Executive Secretary, National Sugar Development Council, (NSDC), Zaack Adedeji, yesterday charged the Oyo State government to provide250, 000 irrigated land for the establishment of a sugar mill in the state.

Adedeji said Nigeria today consumes 1.7metric tones of sugar and to locally produce this in Oyo state the government will require two hundred and fifty thousand irrigated land in a normal temperate area.

The Director General, Oyo State Abuja Liaison Office, Wale Ajani said the sugar council has been doing a lot which is very impressing, as he emphasized that people cannot do without sugar.

Ajani noted that the state government is ready to work with NCDC to ensure more sugar factory in Oyo State, the state is also working on its agricultural sector, re-modernising farming especially for commercial purpose. The key component in the state’s agricultural sector is sugar farming. Farming sugar cane and not being able to transfer it to sugar is waste of time. The state also appeals to the council to help in training locals on sugar production.
