Plateau Governor Simon Lalong has pardoned seven ‘reformed’ inmates in different correctional centres across the state.

Lalong said the gesture was in the spirit of the Democracy Day celebration.

He added that five prisoners on death roll had their sentences commuted to life imprisonment while two others got an absolute pardon.

“On Prerogative Of Mercy, I have granted various categories of pardon to seven (7) Prisoners for their good conduct.

“All these pardons are granted for reasons of good conduct with effect from the different dates of sentences,” he explained.

The Nation reports the pardoned inmates are: Nanfa Gwantur (Death sentence commuted to life imprisonment); Timkur Laven (Death sentence commuted to life imprisonment); Ponzing Nanshe (Death sentence commuted to life imprisonment);
Dauda Joshua (Death sentence commuted to life imprisonment) and Wasa Zachariah (Death Sentence commuted to life imprisonment).

Davou Dalyop Mancha and Cletus Augustine got absolute pardon.

The release took immediate effect.

The Governor acted on the advice of the Advisory Committee on Prerogative of Mercy and in the exercise of the powers conferred on him by Section 212(i) (d) of the 1999 Constitution as amended.
