Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed

Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed disclosed at a recent event that President Muhammadu Buhari plans to slash workers' salary in order to reduce the cost of governance that has become a burden on governments coffers.

She made the disclosure at the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission in Abuja on Tuesday, May 4, 2021. Ahmed said the salaries of civil servants will be reviewed.

The finance minister said President Buhari has tasked the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission to review the salaries of federal agencies as well.

She said this is important amid declining revenue which is mostly used to service debt. It was revealed that revenue continues to fall below government expenditure, Legit.ng reports.

Part of the cut in government expenditure will include merging of agencies and doing away with unnecessary spending Ahmed said:

“We still see government expenditure increase to a terrain twice higher than our revenue. "The nation’s budgets are filled every year with projects that are recycled over and over again and are also not necessary.

“Mr President has directed that the salaries committee that I chair, work together with the Head of Service and other members of the committee to review the government payrolls in terms of stepping down on cost."
