Dangote targets December for 650,000bpd refinery completion

The 650,000 barrels per day capacity refinery being constructed by Dangote Group has recorded 90 percent completion and almost set for commissioning in December this year.

Regarded as the largest single-train refinery in the world, the refinery under construction in Lekki, Lagos is expected to address the challenge of petroleum product importation in Nigeria and other African countries.

Speaking at the Nigeria International Petroleum Summit in Abuja, the company’s Group Executive Director, Strategy, Capital Projects and Portfolio Development, Edwin Devakumar, was positive on the completion date.
Devakumar said the project has already recorded 89.50 percent total completion, adding that mechanical completion would be accomplished by fourth quarter this year.

“As at date, the project construction has progressed to 79 per cent and an overall project completion of 89.50 per cent, considering engineering, procurement and construction,” Devakumar said.

According to him, while the refinery has achieved considerable milestones given the global health crisis that hindered the desirable progress, he said: “The project has incurred some delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

“At the current rate of progress the mechanical completion is now expected to be accomplished by fourth quarter. Commissioning is expected to commence immediately.”

While concerns about fuel quality has been a recurring issue in Nigeria and other African regions, he noted that the company has adopted international specifications to ensure environmental challenges are addressed.

Devakumar said the refinery would produce 10.4 million tonnes (Mt) of gasoline, 4.6Mt of diesel, and four million tonnes of jet fuel a year.

According to him, the facility will produce 0.69Mt of polypropylene, 0.24Mt of propane, 32,000t of Sulphur, and 0.5Mt of carbon black feed yearly.
