A Special Assistant to the President, Tolu Ogunlesi has said that any monarch can be dethroned in Nigeria.

Ogunlesi stated this in reaction to the dethronement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano by the Kano State Government on Monday.

A Twitter user had asked if such treatment could be meted out to top monarchs like the Oba of Benin and the Ooni of Ife.

@Mismenalicious tweeted: "If A sitting Governor can dethrone an Emir in a state, does that mean it can happen in any other state where they have the Obas and Oonis? For Example in Benin, Can the governor dethrone the Oba of Benin?".

Tolu Ogunlesi responded to her tweet saying:

"A sitting Governor can dethrone anybody - as in they have the power to. That’s the way the system is set up. Nobody is above being dethroned. Governors formally appoint them, present them staffs of office, fund their offices. Whether this should be so is another matter entirely".
