Pinnick elected into FIFA executive council, named CAF fifth VP

Nigeria Football Federation President Amaju Pinnick has been elected into FIFA’s Executive Council at Confederation of African Football 43rd General Assembly in Rabat, Morocco, on Friday.

Amaju secured a seat in the FIFA Council following withdrawals from the race by other contestants prior to the election.

Lamine Bajo of Gambia, Nicholas Mwendwa of Kenya, Wallace Karia of Tanzania, and Andrew Kamanga of Zambia all withdrew from the race leaving only Pinnick and Walter Nyamilandu – an incumbent in the race which was expected to produce two winners.

He also becomes the fifth Vice-President of CAF.

Other CAF Vice Presidents are Augustin Senghor (first Vice-President), Ahmed Yahya (second Vice- President), Souleiman Waberi (third Vice-President), and Fouzi Lekjaa (fourth Vice-President).

Meanwhile, Africa’s ninth richest man, Patrice Motsepe, is the new president of the Confederation of African Football.

Motsepe who becomes the first man from an Anglophone country to lead the organization stood unopposed.

He was elected to replace Ahmad Ahmad who has been banned from all football-related activities for two years for financial misconduct by FIFA.

He will serve a four-year term until the next elective congress in 2025.

Also, the billionaire mining magnate will also step down as president of Mamelodi Sudowns for the duration of his CAF presidency.

He has since indicated that oldest son Tlhopie Motsepe will become chairman in his father’s absence.
