Mourinho's treatment of Hazard affected us all, cost him his Chelsea job - Ramirez

Ramires Ramires

Former Chelsea player, Ramires, has opened up on what happened to Chelsea after Jose Mourinho went all out against the Blues' playmaker, Eden Hazard.

Chelsea sacked Jose Mourinho in 2015 but the Brazilian believes that Jose's woes started to in 2014 when he lashed out at Hazard publicly, a move that cost him the dressing room.

Mourinho publicly slammed Hazard for lacking defensive work after losing 3-1 on aggregate to Atletico Madrid in the second leg of the 2014 UEFA Champions League semi-final at Stamford Bridge following a goalless draw in the first leg in Spain.

Hazard, who Ramires referred to as their best player, at that time, was affected by Jose's harsh comments. It was soon discovered on the pitch when the Belgian, who "used to take the ball and attack the opponent" started passing too much.

According to Ramires, Hazard's style of play was affected and as a result, “we missed our main attacking threat,” he said.

“The public criticising of Hazard had a big impact because Mourinho started to lose control of the squad,” Ramires told FourFourTwo.

“It is one thing to say something internally, but it’s different to criticise someone publicly.

“Hazard was our best player, and what Mourinho did affect his style play.

“He used to take the ball and attack the opponent.

“Hazard started to pass the ball much more, and we missed our main attacking threat.”

“The atmosphere became heavy. Some guys were already angry because they weren’t playing,” Ramires added.

“When something like that happened with Hazard, some players who were not featuring in games had another ally against the Mourinho.

“It became a snowball that only got bigger and it reached a level where nothing would improve.”
