La Liga to start 2020/21 season on September 12

Javier Tebas Javier Tebas

The president of the Spanish La Liga Javier Tebas has on Friday revealed that he wants the 2020/21 season can start on September 12.

Recall that the coronavirus pandemic forced the current 2019/20 season into a halt in mid-March and a restart has been billed for June 11 with the Seville derby between Real Betis and Sevilla.

"We'll restart, if God allows, on June 11," Tebas said in a videoconference call with MARCA.

"We're hoping that Madrid and Barcelona pass into Phase Two [of the lockdown de-escalation plan], which is where we can play.

"There are more than 130 people at LaLiga working so that everything can be done in a new way. Travel, organisation, everything.

"We're prepared and the important thing will be the day we finish the league.

"We'll start next season on September 12."

Tebas also revealed plans to give people watching the action at home the choice on how they view the matches, which will be played behind closed doors.

"Tonight, we have audiovisual tests so that the viewer can choose two images: the real one and one with a virtual crowd and crowd noise.

"We want to give the choice to the fans: silence or a simulation of the crowds.

"The tests I've seen are interesting and really catch your eye, but there will be two options."

There are still 11 rounds of matches in the Spanish top flight to be played this term. Barcelona and Real Madrid currently top the standings with Quique Setien's squad two points ahead of Zinadine Zidane's.
