Standard Liege have gotten a helping hand from its former player, Marouane Fellaini, who has agreed to give the club a three million euros ($3.26 million) loan as it struggles through the COVID-19.

A report from a Belgian media on Thursday revealed that the ex-Manchester United player followed in the footsteps of fellow Belgian International, Axel Witsel.

Witsel who now plays for B has Borussia Dortmund has reportedly acquired a 45-per cent stake in Standard’s stadium, which is due to undergo extensive renovation works.

In early April, Royal Belgian Football Association refused Standard a professional licence that could see the Pro League side relegated to the amateur divisions.

Reports revealed that the 10-time national champions have appealed to the Belgian sports court, and are expected to obtain the licence thanks to the help of Fellaini and other investors.

A decision is expected to be made on the matter by the court come 5th of May 2020.

After spending two years as a youth player, Fellaini started his senior footballing career with Liege in 2006, scoring a total of nine goals in 69 appearances.
