Spanish club Espanyol have been relegated for the first time in 27 years after suffering an away 1-0 loss to Barcelona at the Camp Nou on Wednesday night.

Espanyol needed a win against the defending champions to keep their hopes of survival alive.

The difficult challenge was given a boost when Ansu Fati was sent off for a clumsy challenge in the 50th minute.

With the game still goalless, the away side were given the opportunity to capitalize on the extra man advantage but squandered it three minutes after when Pol Lozano 53' was red-carded for a foul on Gerard Pique.

Moments after they were reduced to 10-men, Luis Suarez scored the only goal of the game (56') to help Barca keep the pressure on league leaders, Real Madrid.

Los Periquitos (The Budgerigars) who have not beaten Barcelona in La Liga since 2009, when Mauricio Pochettino was coach, have now relegated for the first time since 1994.
