United's win not enough to eliminate City

Manchester United's away win against City was not enough to earn them a place at this year's Carabao Cup final.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side went one goal up in the first 45 courtesy Nemanja Matic's sublime finish in the 35th minute.

City thought they had buried the game after finding the back of United's net twice but the efforts proved futile as the goals were ruled out for offside.

United were reduced to 10 men as goalscorer, Matic, was sent off after a second yellow card with ,14 minutes to go.

Pep Guardiola's City lost the tie 1-0 but they progressed by an aggregate score of 3-2 after wining the first leg 3-1 at Old Trafford.

Pep Guardiola's side are into the final for a third successive year and will go for their seventh EFL Cup win when they face Villa in the final at Wembley on 1 March.

Only Liverpool, who have won it eight times, have a better record in the competition. [BBC]
