Novak Djokovic has regained the top spot of the ATP rankings after successfully defeating Dominic Thiem in the first Grand Slam of the year 2020, Australian Open.

Rafael Nadal, who was the former world number one, was defeated by Thiem in the quarterfinal. The Spaniard dropped to the second spot.

According to TennisHead, Roger Federer remains in the third spot but Nadal will get a chance to go ahead of Djokovic at the Indian Wells Masters tournament in March, as he is only 325 points behind his rival.

Thiem, on the other hand, returned to number four, which equal’s his highest ranking after he reached his first Australian Open final, replacing Daniil Medvedev dropped to world number five.

Djokovic could also break Roger Federer’s record for the most weeks at number one if he keeps the top spot until the 5th October. [TennisHead]
