Stella Monye wants rising stars to do more conscious music

Veteran Nigerian singer, Stella Monye, has urged reigning music stars to release more conscious songs that address ills in the society and country at large.

The entertainer made this known in an exclusive interview with The Nation when she visited the company’s head office in Lagos recently.

“The only thing they didn’t do that I think they should do more is talk about the society because things are not really going right in Nigeria now and people like Fela, Sonny Okosun, they fought for human rights and we are looking forward to really having them from this generation to do the same even fight more but nobody, everybody is just doing leisure thing you know it’s okay,” said the Samba queen.

While comparing this current generation of artists and that of her time, she said, “They are two different generations and I always say when people say oh! they are singing rubbish, I don’t want to agree that they are singing rubbish. I want to say it is the trend, as we go the trend goes with it and you can’t say completely that they are all singing rubbish. I mean people like Tubaba, Psquare, Kizz Daniel, you know, they are doing fantastic also I like Mayorkun’s music, I like Davido, you know, a whole lot of them are doing good.”

Continuing, she said, “So there are no two ways, you cannot write them off completely, it’s not possible, what we did in our generation is different, what they are doing is different and it’s not really different like that you understand. We all have messages, in our generation, people sang love songs, in this generation, people are singing love songs, in this same generation people are singing all kinds of things. I mean sometimes when you are too revolutionized, maybe they don’t want to remind people.”

The ‘Oko mi ye’ star recently celebrated Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s two years in office at an event that she hosted recently in Lagos, tagged ‘104 Choral voices for 104 weeks: A Celebration of Mr Governor Sanwo-Olu’s two years in office.’
