Nigerian Idol: A tribute to African legends as top 11 kick-off live show

The live show stage on the ongoing Nigerian Idol kicked off with a tribute to African music legends.

With Theatre week over, the spotlight beamed on the top 11 contestants of the sixth season of the Nigerian Idol.

The contestants gave heartwarming performances as they strived to impress the judges – Seyi Shay, Obi Asika, and DJ Sose – as well as the viewing fans at home. The first live performances of the top 11 contestants in this season will determine the nine contestants that will forge ahead to the next stage as the two contestants with the least votes would be eliminated next week.

Their performances 23-year-old Akunna stepped up to deliver her rendition of Angelique Kidjo’s ‘Wombo Lombo,’ while Beyonce chose to perform one of Angelique Kidjo’s hit singles she was fond of as a child, ‘Agolo.’ Akunna was praised for her fantastic display by the judges as Asika noted improved confidence in Beyonce’s performance.

Clinton dedicated his cover of late Prince Nico Mbarga’s ‘Sweet Mother’ to his mother but failed to satisfy DJ Sose’s expectations and Comfort tried with no luck in comforting Asika or Seyi Shay with her rendition of Styl-Plus’ 2004 classic ‘Olufunmi.’

Daniel was all smiles after getting kudos from DJ Sose and Obi Asika for his rendition of late Lucky Dube’s hit ‘I’ve Got You Babe,’ and Dotun couldn’t contain his joy after dazzling the three judges with his rendition of Miriam Makeba’s ‘Malaika.’

Emmanuel handed in a scintillating cover of Majek Fashek’s ‘Send Down The Rain,’ and Faith’s decision to go with Sir Victor Uwaifo’s ‘Joromi’ earned him applause.

Salif Keita’s ‘Africa’ took centre stage when Faith Mac left the judges breathless with her rendition.

The sound of late Lucky Dube was called back when Francis ignited emotions with his rendition of ‘Remember Me’ and Kingdom rounded off the show performing Lebo M’s ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight.’
