21 dead, dozens injured as rebels hit Libya's international airport with several rockets

At least 21 people have died, and dozens left injured as rebels launched several rocket attacks in Libya since Friday, May 8.

Africa News reported that the Mitiga International Airport, The Libyan capital’s only functioning airport has been the subject of attack.

The Government of National Accord has accused forces loyal to rebel leader Khalifa Haftar of carrying out the attacks. The Interior Ministry has said that the attacks included as many as 80 rocket strikes.

Of the damaged planes included a repatriation plane flying to Spain retrieve Libyans stranded in Europe by the coronavirus lockdown.

According to reports, several residential areas close to the airport were also destroyed during the attack.

The attacks were the latest to target the airport in the capital where the internationally recognised GNA is based. Haftar’s eastern-based forces have been trying to seize Tripoli since April last year.

The UN once again raised an alarm that ordinary Libyans are bearing the brunt of the conflict, according to the Africa News' report.
