A man has died in a hospital as a result of injuries sustained in an attack by a group of youths in south-eastern Kenya on suspicion of having coronavirus.

As of March 19, there are seven confirmed cases of coronavirus in Kenya, according to Worldometer.

The deceased was attacked on his way home at around 21:00 local time on Tuesday (1800 GMT) after he had been out drinking, according to Kenya’s Daily Nation newspaper.

Local police chief Nehemiah Bitok confirmed the death to the BBC and adding that the attack took place in the fishing village of Msambweni in Kwale county, an area on the coast popular with tourists because of its sandy, white beaches.

The police have started investigations into the victim's death but are yet to make an arrest.

In order to control the spread of COVID-19, Kenya has imposed strict travel restrictions on foreigners, closed learning institutions and banned public gatherings.
