Sudan agrees to surrender former president al-Bashir to ICC

The International Criminal Court - ICC, is expected to take ex-Sudanese President, Omar al-Bashir , into custody after the Sudanese government agreed to hand him over.

According to the BBC, al-Bashir, who was was ousted as president in April 2019, faces charges of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, over the conflict that broke out in the country's Darfur region in 2003.

Sudan witnessed nationwide protests against his 30-year rule last year and succeeded in chasing him.

According to the Independent, al-Bashir had stood trial in Sudan on corruption charges and was sentenced to two years in jail in December.

The decision to hand him over cane on Tuesday after the government and rebel groups in Darfur agreed that those wanted by the ICC would be presented to the tribunal, information Minister Faisal Saleh told Reuters.

He came to power in a military coup in 1989 and ruled the country with an iron fist.
