South Africa may be without power for 18 months due to this reason

A long-overdue maintenance of the company that generates 95% of South Africa’s electricity may see the country thrown into darkness for 18 months. This is after the company warned them to gear up for more power cuts.

The utility company, Eskom has failed to keep up with demand due to the decreasing capacity of its aging power plants.

It doesn't stop there, the government shares the blame after refusing to give the company the green light to invest in new capacity.

Chief Executive of Eskom, Andre de Ruyter said ‘‘we will have to give ourselves the space to fix what needs to be fixed."

Eskom has amassed over 50 billion rand or $ 30 billion of debt. The company is not generating enough income to cover its cost, thus leaving it dependent on state bailouts to remain solvent, Africa News reports.

The power system is expected to remain vulnerable for 18 months.
