Egypt orders autopsy of US citizen who died in detention

Following the death of detained US-Egyptian citizen, the country's top prosecutor has ordered an autopsy and thorough investigation to be carried out so as to determine the cause of his death.

After being in custody since 2013, Mostafa Kassem died on Monday after a hunger strike he entered to protest his conviction.

Kassem was sentenced in 2018 to 15 years in prison over a 2013 pro-Muslim Brotherhood sit-in in Cairo.

Egypt's to Prosecutor-General Hamda El-Sawi, announce that Kassem died at a Cairo hospital after he had been transferred from a jail hospital to the Cairo university hospital the night before.

Kassem has reportedly been on multiple hunger strikes since 2018 to protest his imprisonment.
