The name Victoria Kimani may soon be forgotten - here's why

Music fans and lovers of popular Kenyan singing sensation, Victoria Kimani, will have to accept forgetting the name Victoria kimani after the artist made a shocking decision on her identity.

During an interview with the BBC, the singer announced that she no longer wants to be referred to as Victoria Kimani, henceforth, she is dropping the name.

"This is an exclusive! I am decolonising my name… so I’m actually removing Victoria completely," she told BBC.

Kimani, as she now wants to be called, is Kenya’s most successful musical brands, so surely, I put it to her, changing her name at this stage would be a bad move for her career?

She revealed that her career as a global artist has barely begun: “Most people don’t know who Victoria or Kimani is, for a lot of people I’m a brand new artist, I think any real fans will understand, so it’s not really a big deal.”

It may be a surprise to those who know the sexy, 100% female image that Kimani presents on her socials and in her videos that apart from decolonising, there’s another reason she feels more comfortable simply being Kimani:

“I identify with things and people that are androgynous. I want people to not just look at me but look into me.”
