The only neurosurgeon in the whole of Liberia has told the BBC he has no intention of leaving the country.

Liberia has a population of nearly five million people yet 38-year-old Alvin Nah-Doe is the only person qualified to carry out surgery on the brain.

He says that one of the challenges is that, although he can carry out brain surgery, he is often involved in helping with minor injuries.

"I can do brain surgery but we have so many minor injuries that need my intervention."

Even so, he insists he will stay in the country.

"If I leave this country there will be no-one.... Being here to help our people as a patriot is something that I love doing."

About half the population faces food insecurityImage caption: About half the population faces food insecurity

The Zimbabwean government has warned that it only has enough grain reserves to last a month, following one of the worst droughts in decades.

About half the population faces food insecurity as supplies of the staple maize run out because of failing rains.

Several shop owners told the BBC they had been without supplies for days and any stock that arrived ran out within hours.

Zimbabwe's strategic grain reserves have dwindled to 100,000 tonnes but the country will need eight times as much this year.

Yet private importers say supplies should improve next week when grain is due to arrive from South Africa and Brazil.
