Congo suspends Mayor for allegedly embezzling €1.9 million

Mayor of Brazzaville, Christian Roger Okemba has been suspended by the government of Congo over a case of alleged embezzlement of €1.9 million.

The Mayor whose tenure runs until 2023, was suspended from office by the Minister of the Interior and Decentralization.

Okemba was suspended for misappropriating €1.9 million, funds embarked for the "Brazza 100 days operation." Part of the funds was to be utilized in the repair of roads in the capital. The Government also ordered the freezing of the municipality account where the funds were ordered.

Several people have called for the removal of the Mayor.

The development is the first of its kind in the nation.
