European football icon Cristiano Ronaldo has officially retired from international football following an explosive fallout with Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus.
The 41-year-old leaves behind an unmatched international legacy as Portugal's all-time leading goalscorer, boasting a monumental record of 146 goals in 234 appearances, alongside captaining the nation to its historic 2016 European Championship triumph.
The superstar's sudden departure follows a bitter breach during the recent international break. Ronaldo walked out of the national team camp after being left on the bench throughout Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway in Oslo. At the final whistle, the veteran forward walked straight down the tunnel to the dressing room, refusing to join his teammates in applauding the travelling supporters.
The Portuguese Football Federation subsequently handed down a fine and a suspension from international duty following a lengthy public statement detailing his unapproved exit from the camp.
Ronaldo hit back with an explosive response, publicly accusing manager Jorge Jesus of breaking direct promises made to him on the touchline.
According to Ronaldo, he was instructed to begin warming up under the assurance that he would be brought on as a substitute during the match, only for Jesus to renege on the decision and leave him on the bench.
With his international retirement now confirmed, Ronaldo brings a tumultuous end to a legendary 20-plus-year career wearing the national shirt.
