Iwobi deletes Fulham posts after recent jeers

Nigeria international Alex Iwobi has deleted all his Fulham-related posts from Instagram, days after being jeered by a section of supporters during his substitution in the club’s 3-2 Premier League defeat to Crystal Palace.

Iwobi was taken off in the 82nd minute of that match, with ironic cheers and jeers greeting his withdrawal despite the midfielder reportedly having covered the second-highest distance of any Fulham player on the pitch that day.

Former Arsenal teammate Emile Smith Rowe has also wiped his Instagram profile clean of football-related content, with both players’ accounts going dark amid Fulham’s difficult start to the season.

The Cottagers have lost all three of their opening Premier League fixtures to sit 19th in the table, with only promoted Coventry City suffering a worse start on goal difference.

Iwobi started all three of those matches, while Smith Rowe made substitute appearances in two of them and was an unused substitute in the other.

It is not the first time Iwobi has removed his Fulham-related posts, having done the same earlier in the year before reactivating many of them in late May.

He joined the club from Everton in 2023 under Marco Silva, having previously played for the coach at Everton, and has since become an important figure both on and off the pitch, with teammates describing him as central to the mood in the dressing room.

The 30-year-old faced a similar wave of criticism following the Super Eagles’ loss at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil, when he endured what was widely condemned as unfounded abuse on social media and responded in the same manner, wiping his Instagram account at the time.

Fulham’s difficulties are not expected to ease soon, with the club due to travel to Anfield to face an unbeaten Liverpool side this weekend.
