Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen was forced off in Galatasaray’s 3-2 Istanbul derby win over Basaksehir last Friday, and the resulting right adductor injury is expected to sideline the 27-year-old for around three weeks, ruling him out of Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League opener at Sporting CP in Lisbon, Afrik-Foot reports.

On the surface, the timing could not be worse. Osimhen had scored six goals in his opening four Süper Lig appearances.

However, when the immediate disappointment subsides, there are two specific reasons Buruk may quietly find some medium-term benefit in the enforced Osimhen break.

1. It forces Buruk to integrate Leao and Sane as goalscoring options

The first significant upside is that Osimhen’s absence removes the ready-made excuse for Galatasaray’s attackers not to carry a share of the goalscoring burden.

Rafael Leao arrived from AC Milan this summer, while Leroy Sané joined from Bayern Munich last season.

Both are natural winger profiles capable of scoring 15-plus goals in a domestic season on their day.

Neither has yet been asked to be the goalscoring focal point at Galatasaray because Osimhen has occupied that role, but the next three weeks change that entirely.

Leao and Sane are likely to play against Sporting CP and Kocaelispor, with the expectation that they are the men who have to break down opposition defences.

If both step up in that period, Buruk exits September with something Galatasaray have not had for two seasons: an attack that does not need Osimhen on the pitch to score goals.

2. It forces Victor Osimhen into a necessary rest

Victor Osimhen’s injury record isn’t particularly a clean bill, as the Super Eagles striker has had problems with being available for a full season throughout his career.

The right adductor injury is exactly the type of muscular issue that typically results from cumulative load.

A three-week enforced rest at this specific point in the calendar is significantly less disruptive than the four to six weeks Osimhen missed last season through his broken forearm sustained against Liverpool in the Champions League.

It is also considerably less damaging than the risk of a more serious muscular injury later in the season, when Galatasaray need him for the Champions League knockout rounds, and Nigeria need him for the March AFCON 2027 qualifiers.

Galatasaray have publicly stated that Osimhen has begun treatment and are managing his recovery conservatively.

If the three-week timeline holds, he returns for the October international window fully rested and ready for a Champions League matchday two fixture against Barcelona, exactly the type of European night his club paid €75 million for him to lead.

Buruk will take that trade-off over a rushed return that pushes a fresh injury into November.
