Buruk explains Osimhen absence in Gala win

Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk has clarified the absence of Victor Osimhen from the matchday squad in their 2–1 victory over Gençlerbirliği, insisting the decision was driven by fitness concerns rather than tactical preference, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Super Eagles forward travelled with the squad to Ankara for the Trendyol Süper Lig encounter at the Eryaman Stadium, but was ultimately not included as Galatasaray strengthened their title push ahead of next week’s derby against Fenerbahçe.

Galatasaray took control early in the 30th round fixture, with Mauro Icardi opening the scoring in the second minute before Yunus Akgün doubled the lead in the 35th minute.

Gençlerbirliği reduced the deficit through Niang in the 67th minute, but the visitors held on to secure a crucial win that moved them to 71 points, four ahead at the top of the table, while their opponents remained on 25 points.

Explaining Osimhen’s omission before the match, Buruk said the striker had taken part in parts of training but struggled with fatigue and was not deemed ready for competitive action.

He noted that the player had not fully recovered from recent physical exertions and required careful management to avoid further issues.

Buruk was quoted as saying by gzt.com, “Osimhen participated in certain parts of the training sessions. He experienced fatigue after these sessions,” adding that the coaching staff took a cautious approach.

He further confirmed that the decision was made to protect the forward.

“We didn’t think he was suitable for the squad this week,” he added.

Despite the setback, the Galatasaray coach offered reassurance over the striker’s recovery timeline and suggested a gradual return to action in the coming fixtures.

He said the club would carefully monitor Osimhen’s condition ahead of upcoming matches, adding: “We will see how many minutes he can play in the next cup match.”

Buruk also expressed optimism that the Nigerian international would be available for one of the club’s most important fixtures of the season, the derby against Fenerbahçe, stating, “Of course, he will be able to play in the Fenerbahçe match.”
