Former Chelsea captain John Terry has shed light on why the Blues sacked manager Enzo Maresca.
The London club on Thursday, January 1, announced that it had parted ways with the former Leicester City manager in what was a shocking development.
Maresca’s sacking comes less than six months after he led the club to win the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, after beating European champions Paris Saint-Germain in the final.
Prior to the FIFA Club World Cup triumph, the Blues had won the Conference League after edging Real Betis in the final.
Terry disclosed that he was shocked after hearing the news of Maresca’s dismissal, adding that the Italian manager had fallen out with the club hierarchy.
“Enzo Maresca has just been fired by Chelsea, and to be honest, I’m totally shocked. I didn’t expect it at all,” the former defender said on TikTok.
“I know things of late haven’t been how he would like.
“You can tell there’s been some tension by what you see and hear. I’ve gotten a lot of phone calls this morning since the news came out, and everyone is asking me what’s going on.
“I don’t know what’s going on, and since I’m not part of the first team, I can’t say for sure. Just my take from a distance, there’s definitely been some tension between the manager and the owner, and that’s why they’ve made this decision.
“It’s a big surprise because if you go back three or four weeks, we were doing really well against Barcelona. It was really good, but four weeks later, the form and performance clearly weren’t good enough.
“I think the manager is inexperienced, just like the rest of the team. It was his first real job in the top league, and he has mentioned that he’s still learning and sometimes makes mistakes.
“But I will say there’s always two sides to every story, and there are definitely things going on behind the scenes that I don’t know about. I just hear the same kind of rumors that everyone else does.”
