Former Nigeria defender Ifeanyi Udeze has backed Victor Osimhen to end his Africa Cup of Nations goal drought when the Super Eagles face Tunisia on Saturday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Udeze expressed confidence that the striker’s goals will come despite his failure to score in Nigeria’s opening victory over Tanzania, a match in which Osimhen missed several clear-cut chances.
Osimhen has now scored once in nine Africa Cup of Nations appearances across three editions, extending his barren run at the tournament.
The Galatasaray forward, however, arrives in Morocco in strong form at club and international level, having scored 12 goals for Galatasaray this season and eight for Nigeria in 2025.
Udeze said Osimhen’s recent struggles at the tournament were not a cause for concern.
“He didn’t score against Tanzania, but the goals will come,” Udeze told Footy-Africa.
“For me, it is not a problem. He just needs to keep his cool, and the goals will follow. He is a very good player and a natural goal machine.”
The former defender added that Osimhen was visibly frustrated after drawing a blank in the opener but expects a response against Tunisia.
“He was frustrated and angry that he didn’t score against Tanzania, but hopefully he scores against Tunisia and the goals start flowing,” he said.
Nigeria and Tunisia meet in a top-of-the-table Group encounter at the 40,000-capacity Fez Stadium on Saturday (today).
Both sides won their opening matches, with Tunisia beating Uganda, and victory on Saturday would secure early qualification for the round of 16.
Udeze is anticipating a closely fought contest.
