Retiring Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has counted his achievements with the Nigerian national football team.

The defender announced his retirement from the Super Eagles on Thursday, ending a decade-long career with Nigeria.

Many fans received his resignation with shock as it came just two weeks before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

National team handler, Eric Chelle had also included the former Watford star in his 52-man professional squad for the tournament.

Troost-Ekong played his first game for Nigeria in 2015 after he was called up by the late Stephen Keshi.

Troost-Ekong, who expressed gratitude for the privilege of playing for Nigeria, said he never dreamt of going on to captain the Super Eagles.

“To have achieved 83 senior caps, played in five major tournaments, three medals, and broken a few records, I really lived my dreams,” he said in a video posted on social media.

“A bronze medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics, followed by playing at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, and three incredible AFCON tournaments, with a bronze and recently a silver medal, will remain unforgettable.”
