Manchester United inquire about star who says he would have chosen Nigeria over Germany

Karim Adeyemi Karim Adeyemi

German-Nigerian forward Karim Adeyemi has emerged as one of Manchester United's priority targets as they look to bolster their squad, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Red Devils have reportedly contacted his agent, Jorge Mendes, to obtain clarity on his current situation, as Dortmund continue to struggle with contract renewal talks.

The 23-year-old’s future remains uncertain in Germany, especially with stalled negotiations over a release clause.

With tension reported between the player and Dortmund boss Niko Kovač earlier this season, per Football Transfers, top European clubs are monitoring developments closely ahead of a potential move.

Manchester United Inquire About Karim Adeyemi

Reliable Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg revealed that Manchester United have formally inquired about Karim Adeyemi’s availability and obtained fresh information from the player’s representative, Jorge Mendes.

United are keeping tabs on the situation as uncertainty persists over the winger’s long-term future at Borussia Dortmund.

Dortmund remain determined to extend the German international’s contract, which runs until 2027. However, negotiations have stalled with Adeyemi and Mendes, as they insist on the insertion of a release clause.

Without a breakthrough, Dortmund may face mounting pressure to either compromise or consider offers next summer.

This development coincides with reports of minor tensions between Adeyemi and manager Niko Kovač earlier in the season, including a touchline incident that hinted at a strained relationship.
Combined with his mixed form in recent months, his situation has placed several top sides, including Arsenal and Manchester United, on alert.

Choosing Nigeria over Germany
Beyond ongoing transfer speculation, Adeyemi has often spoken warmly about Nigeria and his roots.

During a December 2023 visit to the Karim Adeyemi Foundation’s Football Academy at Olubadan Stadium in Ibadan, he was asked by a 12-year-old fan why he did not play for the Super Eagles.

Adeyemi responded simply: “Germany came first.”

However, he did not rule out the possibility of representing Nigeria had circumstances been different.

In an interview with Soccernet.ng, Adeyemi openly praised Nigeria’s football heritage and expressed admiration for the quality of players across generations.

When asked if he would have considered the Super Eagles, he replied:

“If I had the chance, of course. For me, I think it’s a great national team… they have good players, and in the past, they were also great.”
