Benin Republic head coach Gernot Rohr has expressed his disappointment following his side's heavy defeat to Nigeria in the World Cup qualifiers.
Despite needing only a draw to keep their qualification hopes alive, the Cheetahs conceded four unanswered goals to a high-flying Super Eagles side at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen netted a hat-trick, with substitute Frank Onyeka adding a fourth in stoppage time to seal a remarkable victory for the three-time African champions.
The defeat ended Benin’s hopes of qualifying for their first-ever FIFA World Cup, as South Africa secured top spot in Group C with 18 points, while Nigeria claimed the second-place position with 17 points.
Reacting after the match, the 70-year-old Rohr said:
“We’re disappointed because our dream was to play at the World Cup,” Rohr told a press conference.
“Big disappointment—that is my initial reaction.
“However, we have a young team, and we will continue to build.”
