President Bola Tinubu has honoured Nigeria's national women's basketball team, D'Tigress, with generous rewards following their remarkable victory at the 2025 FIBA Women's AfroBasket Championship in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire.

At a special reception held in their honour on Monday evening at the new State House Banquet Hall, Abuja, Vice President Kashim Shettima, speaking on behalf of the President, announced a cash reward of $100,000 for each player, a three-bedroom flat, and the conferment of the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).

Members of the coaching and technical crew were not left out. Each received $50,000, a flat, and was also awarded the OON in recognition of their role in the team's historic success.

Receiving the champions, Vice President Shettima hailed their achievement as a testament to the enduring strength, resilience, and unity of the Nigerian spirit.

"You have brought immense pride to Nigeria," Shettima said. "Your excellence on the court has once again put our nation on the global map for sporting greatness."

The team, led by Head Coach Rena Wakama, clinched their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title, and seventh overall, after a commanding 78–64 win over Mali in Sunday's final at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan.

The victory extended their unbeaten run in the tournament since 2017, reinforcing Nigeria's dominance in African women's basketball.

The D'Tigress contingent arrived at the forecourt of the President's office shortly before 5:00 p.m. and was received at the New Banquet Hall by top government dignitaries, including First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima, and Chief of Staff to the President, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila.

Also in attendance were key members of the National Assembly, including the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Youth and Sports Development, Senator Garba Maidoki, and Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Hon. Kabiru Amadou.

Monday's reception came exactly one week after President Tinubu similarly honoured the Super Falcons, following their record-extending tenth Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) triumph in Rabat, Morocco.

The back-to-back celebrations have drawn praise from sports stakeholders as a sign of renewed state support for women's sports in the country.

The recognition of D'Tigress adds another golden chapter to Nigeria's sports history and reinforces the administration's commitment to rewarding excellence and inspiring the next generation of athletes.
