John Mikel Obi has expressed strong dissatisfaction with Mikel Arteta's managerial tenure at Arsenal after the Gunners once again failed to secure silverware this season.
Arsenal recorded an impressive 1-0 victory over Newcastle United in the Premier League last weekend, cementing their position as runners-up for the third consecutive season behind champions Liverpool.
The Gunners have also secured qualification for next season's UEFA Champions League.
Having finished second in the past two seasons behind Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, many believed this would be Arsenal's year to claim the top spot. However, Mikel Arteta's side fell short once again—this time to Arne Slot's Liverpool.
Despite spending over €700 million on signings, Arteta's team has won just one FA Cup trophy in the past six to seven years.
Former Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi believes the Spanish manager has underperformed.
“It's about winning trophies. Yes, he got there, but he didn't get them over the line. It's the same thing—he always comes second,” Mikel said.
“It's always about next season for Arsenal, and now we are talking about next season again. He wants to spend more in the summer. He's spent €700-800 million over six years—that’s a lot of money."
"Arteta has been there for six or seven years. These are his players, this is his team, so he has no excuses."
“For someone who has been there that long and spent so much money, winning just one FA Cup isn't enough.”
