Former Super Eagles head coach Finidi George has shared his thoughts on Nigeria’s impressive display against Benin Republic in their African Cup of Nations qualifier opener.
The three-time African champions got their campaign off to a flying start after thumping Gernot Rohr’s side 3-0 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Saturday, September 7.
Ballon d’Or nominee Ademola Lookman scored a brace, with Victor Osimhen coming off the bench to add the third and seal a convincing victory for the 2023 AFCON finalists.
The victory comes three months after the team lost against the same opponent in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers with Finidi George at the helm.
The defeat contributed to the former Real Betis forward stepping down as head coach, as the team lost 2-1 to Benin Republic in Abidjan following a disappointing 1-1 draw against South Africa on home soil.
Speaking on the team’s performance, Finidi George, who is now the head coach of NPFL side Rivers United, stated that Nigeria would have won against Benin in June if the players had put in the same performance they did in last Saturday’s game.
“I wished they had played that way when I was the coach. That didn’t happen, and from the result of yesterday’s game, I think they must have performed very well. I am a Nigerian and I wish the team all the best, but my focal point is not the Super Eagles for now,” Finidi said as quoted by OwnGoalNigeria.
“I am happy that they won the game. If they had put up the same performance, I think we would have defeated Benin Republic a month or two ago. But it’s understandable because I took the team when they were on holiday.”
