Former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Pinnick has revealed why he supported the appointment of Finidi George as Super Eagles head coach.

Finidi George, who served as assistant coach under Jose Peseiro for 20 months, was appointed substantive head coach on April 29.

However, he resigned after just 46 days following the NFF's decision to hire a foreign technical adviser for the team.

The NFF's decision came after Nigeria's disappointing results in the World Cup qualifiers, including a 1-1 draw against South Africa in Uyo and a 2-1 loss to Benin Republic in Abidjan.

These results cast doubt on the Super Eagles' chances of securing a World Cup ticket, with only three points from four matches.

In an exclusive interview with Arise TV, Pinnick explained why he backed Finidi George's appointment.

"Why I supported indigenous coach [Finidi George] in the last selection process is because I communed with the NFF, and I was made to understand that they didn't have the funding for a coach, they actually wanted a foreign but at that point they didn't have the funding", the former NFF chief said.

"They needed to resort to early transition for it to be as seamless as possible for them to have a coach that was in the team of Peseiro that went to the finals of AFCON and that was Finidi George, there was nothing to it," Pinnick concluded.
