Former Super Eagles striker Peter Ijeh has disclosed the favourite team to win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which will kick off in Ivory Coast in a few days.

The competition comprises 24 teams, with the top 15 national teams in Africa, according to the latest FIFA World rankings, all included.

Speaking exclusively to Sports Brief, Ijeh believes that defending Champions Senegal are the major contender for the title.

"The current title holder, Senegal, is an obvious contender for the AFCON; They finished on top of their AFCON qualification group with 14 points from 6 games," he said.

"Heading into this year’s competition, Senegal are the holders for the first time in AFCON history having beaten record winners Egypt (7-time champions) at Olembe Stadium in Yaounde via penalties following a 0-0 draw.

The former Copenhagen striker also named other teams that are favourites to win the biggest football competition in Africa alongside the Teranga Lions.

"The defending champ Senegal is a predictable, CIV(Host), Nigeria, Egypt, Ghana, Senegal, Morocco, Cameroon, and Algeria: These teams are familiar with the competition and have tasted glory on the AFCON big stage," he added.
The tournament will begin with a game between the host nation Ivory Coast and Guinea-Bissau on Saturday, January, 13.
