Liberia President, George Weah has congratulated Victor Osimhen on his record-break season at Napoli.

Osimhen broke the 19-year record of the Weah en route to claiming the Scudetto.

The 24-year-old who has become the most sought-after striker in Europe after Manchester City's Erling Haaland and Karim Benzema in Real Madrid has scored 24 goals in the Serie A.

The goal tally makes him the highest goal scorer in the league.

Since Sunday's victory that ultimately confirmed Napoli champions, Osimhen went on to break Weah's record of the number of goals scored by an African footballer in Italy.

Weah who played for AC Milan in the 90s scored 46 goals in 1999 - no African player has been able to crack the record.

Osimhen described Weah as an inspiration to most African footballers in a message on his Instagram page.

He wrote: “While growing up, I have always admired the great achievements of so many African legends, and his Excellency Mr George Weah is one of them, an icon in the world of football and also a leader to his people. Someone who has motivated and inspired millions of young talents alike.

“Yesterday, it was a great honour to break his record as the top-scoring African player in Serie A history, an achievement I will forever cherish. Mr George Weah has set a foundation of excellence for individuals like me to emulate, and his legacy will forever be remembered.

“I celebrate this milestone with everyone who has inspired and supported me in this journey. Thank you for your contributions, God is the greatest.”
