'I like watching Wilfred Ndidi play' — Oliseh

Wilfred Ndidi Wilfred Ndidi

Former Super Eagles midfielder and coach, Sunday Oliseh has expressed his admiration for Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi.

Oliseh handed Ndidi his first national team call-up in 2015 at a time the latter was plying his for KRC Genk in the Belgium Jupiler League.

Ndidi has since gone ahead to make 47 appearances for the Super Eagles.

Oliseh has said that he enjoys watching the 26-year-old play not because he gave him his national team debut but rather because he can identify with the Leicester City midfielder's style of play.

The 47-year-old was an epitome of a more creative midfielder who understood his role.

He was described as a player who was more focused on ball retention and passing rather than solely looking to win back possession.

Responding to the question of which current Super Eagles player mirrors his role, the former Borussia Dortmund man said:

“I like watching Wilfred Ndidi play, not because I gave him his first national call-up, not at all, Oliseh noted on the ATHLST podcast.

“But I like his style of play because one thing about playing as a defensive midfielder or playing the role of a goalkeeper or the Central defence is that to do that, you will have to work for others. The goalkeeper doesn’t have time to show skills but has to correct others’ errors.

“Defensive midfielders are always saving others, so anybody playing that role must be selfless as a human being to play it well”.

Ndidi has seen very little playing time for the Foxes this season due to his recent nagging injury concerns.
