Former Super Eagles left-back Taiye Taiwo emerged as the hero the last time the Super Eagles defeated their rivals the Black Stars of Ghana some 17 years ago.
Nigeria beat the World Cup-bound Ghanaian team by a lone goal, courtesy of a superb hit by Taiye Taiwo in the Group D opener of the 2006 Nations Cup in Egypt.
The Super Eagles were awarded a free kick from 40 yards out after Wilson Oruma was fouled by the Ghanaian defence.
The quick-thinking Ayila Yussuf rolled the ball sideways to Taiye Taiwo who unleashed a powerful low shot to beat the unprepared Ghana defence.
Taiye Taiwo punished the Ghana defence for the momentary loss of concentration with 5 minutes left on the clock.
Nigeria went ahead to win their remaining group games against Senegal and Zimbabwe to finish on top of Group D with 9 points.
