High-flying Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman has sent a strong signal to his Super Eagles compatriot Victor Osimhen in their chase for the Serie A golden boot.

Lookman, 25, is the second top scorer in the Italian topflight with 12 goals for Atalanta - two goals behind his fellow countryman Osimhen who has managed 14 goals for the Serie A leaders.

The Super Eagles duo was on target again over the weekend as Atalanta and Napoli recorded wins in their respectively league matches.

Lookman opened the scoring for Gian Piero Gasperini's side as they beat Sampdoria 2-0 at the Gewiss Stadium on Saturday, January 28.

Osimhen on the other end scored a spectacular as Napoli beat Roma 2-1 at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on Sunday, January 29.

When asked about his chances of surpassing his Super Eagles teammate in the race for the golden boot, the ex-Leicester City forward said:

“I will catch him (Osimhen). Not I might, I will,” he told The Athletic.

Lookman has been the best signing in Serie A since joining the Bergamo-based club in the summer from RB Leipzig.

The 25-year-old who has been capped 4 times for Nigeria has managed 14 goals and 4 assists in 20 appearances across all competitions for Atalanta.

No African player has ever won the top scorer award in the history of Serie A, a jinx which is likely to be broken this season.
