Midfielder Joe Aribo was left on the bench again as Southampton stunned Manchester City 2-0 to reach the semi-final of English League Cup.

The Super Eagles star hasn’t enjoyed a regular playing time since Nathan Jones replaced Ralph Hasenhuttl in November 2022, and the midfielder watched the Saints biggest win of the season from his bench.

The Nigerian international played just of Southampton four games in the competition, with zero goal contributions on both occasion.

No one can fault Nathan Jones’ as Southampton looks more solid and aggressive without the Nigerian international at Saint Mary’s Stadium last night.

They defended in numbers and denied City space to operate. Although  Peo Guadiola’s men had 70% of ball possession but they failed to record a shot on target.

The game was settled in the first half by Sekou Mara’s crisp finish after 23 minutes and a superb second from Moussa Djenepo five minutes later when he caught City keeper Stefan Ortega badly out of position off his line with a lofted long-range finish.

Southampton will be aiming to transfer the form to the league.
