Nothing will change in Nigerian sports – Enakhena

Godwin Enakhena Godwin Enakhena

Sports journalist Godwin Enakhena has expressed worries over the poor state of sports in Nigeria, predicting that the country was not about to witness a change in fortunes.

Enakhena noted that sports in Nigeria was run as a recreation, rather than as business.

Enakhena, in a chat with The PUNCH, said the state of sports in the country was a reflection of how sports was run in the country.

He added that until the country utilised sports as an economic driver, the sports industry would continue to suffer.

“I’ve said this many times and for emphasis let me repeat that until we fix Nigeria, sports will remain what it is, mere recreation,” Enakhena told The PUNCH.

“We can continue to pretend that all will be well, but the truth is that all will not be. Our biggest challenge is that successive governments across board have refused to focus on their responsibilities, which are providing an enabling environment, building infrastructure and giving grants where necessary.

“We all say that sports is a billion-dollar industry that is being managed by the government that is not in the business of making profits but rendering services.

“Nothing will change in 2023, as the difference will remain the same with one step forward and 10 steps backwards. Government should play its role the way its done universally.”
