World Cup: Costa Rica shock Japan

Japan lost 1-0 to Costa Rica in their second Group E fixture of the 2022 FIFA World Cup on Sunday.

Ritsu Doan had an early chance to score for Japan in the third minute but he volleyed the shot wide.

Costa Rica Joel Campbell fired over the Japanese keeper’s cross bar in the 35th minute from range.

Yasuhito Endo’s header was well handled by Keylor Navas two minutes after the second half resumed.

Costa Rica had a rare entry into Japan’s 18 yard box in the 56th minute when Campbell sent an indirect free kick into the area but it didn’t yield any results.

Yuki Soma sent a free kick sailing over the Costa Rican post in the 63rd minute without troubling Navas in goal.

Daichi Kamada slammed a free kick into the wall on the edge of the box after Junya Ito was fouled.

Keysher Fuller scored for Costa Rica with their first shot on target at the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

The Samurai Blue of Japan will play Spain on Thursday, December 1 in their third Group game.
