Nigerian striker Cyriel Dessers has defended his decision to leave KRC Genk to the newly promoted Cremonese during the European summer transfer window.

The 27-year-old began the new season on a blistering note for Genk scoring 3 goals in his first 3 outings in the Belgium Pro League.

The Dutch-born Nigerian was criticized for trying to engineer a move away from Belgium following his meeting with FC Copenhagen boss, Jess Thorup in July.

Dessers finally joined Cremonese on August 1 for a reported fee of 6.5 million euros.

The ex-Feyenoord striker endured a difficult start to football in the Italian Serie A after failing to score in his first 8 Serie A outings for Cremonese.

The Super Eagles striker finally broke his duck against Napoli on Matchday 9 when he scored in his side's 4-1 defeat to the league leaders.

He continued on the same trajectory by scoring against Spezia in the Serie A last weekend in their 2-2 draw.

However, his side, Cremonese are yet to record their first win after 10 league games and are currently 19th on the Serie A league table with just 4 points, but the Conference League top scorer insists that he made the right decision by joining Cremonese.

“This was my dream. I have already played in a full Olimpico against Roma, met Inter in San Siro and recently scored my first goal against a strong Napoli.

We lost 1-4, but I scored the equalizer. At least then you can cheer.

“I don’t feel (regret) that way until now. If the backlog were to get to the end, you might get that. So it would be ideal to be above the danger zone by then.”

Dessers will be in action when Cremonese welcomes Sampdoria at home in the Serie A on Monday, October 24.
