AFN meet: Adegoke, Nwokocha win 100m titles

Enoch Adegoke and Grace Nwokocha claimed the men and women’s 100m titles respectively at the Athletics Federation of Nigeria Evaluation Competition held at the Federal University of Technology, Akure on Saturday.

The event, which had the Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Sunday Dare, in attendance, was organised by the Olamide George-led faction of the AFN.

Adegoke, who also won the AFN All Comers event at the same venue with a World Lead time in January, claimed a second victory with a time of 10.36s ahead of Fakorede Adekalu and Jerry Jakpa in second and third places respectively, with a time of 10.51s and 10.57s.

Nwokocha beat Joy Udo-Gabriel and Praise Idamadudu to second and third positions respectively with a Personal Best time of 11.23s, with Udo-Gabriel clocking 11.64s and Idamadudu returning in 11.67s.

In the men’s 110m hurdles, Wisdom Musa clocked a PB time of 14.11s to outshine favourite and 2019 African Games silver medallist, Oyeniyi Abejoye, who placed second in 14.20s, while Martins Ogeriakhi finished third in 14.34s.

Ifeanyi Ojeli won the men’s 400m, while Imaobong Uko claimed the women’s crown.

Speaking after the competition, sports minister, Sunday Dare, said he was impressed that many of the athletes who took part in the competition were able to break their personal best records.

“It is quite impressive; we have seen that we are gaining momentum as we prepare for the Olympics. Also, what gladdens my heart is the young athletes who are now setting Personal Best records, you can see the excitement, the spirit of competitiveness, and I think the future of Nigerian track and field is great,” Dare said.
