Yakubu Aiyegbeni gives verdict on Finidi George after poor World Cup qualifier campaign

It was a disappointing June window for Nigeria in their World Cup qualifiers campaign.

The Super Eagles were held to a 1-1 draw against South Africa at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo before losing 2-1 to Benin Republic at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan.

These results leave Nigeria languishing in 5th position with only three points out of a possible 12.

Disappointed with the outcomes, fans have called for the immediate dismissal of coach Finidi George, who has only been in charge for these two qualifier matches.

Some fans have also questioned the process that led to the selection of the former Enyimba FC coach to succeed Jose Peseiro.

In a latest development, former Super Eagles striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni has shared his thoughts on whether to sack or retain the former Real Betis player.

“I saw their game against South Africa, and I thought they were a bit unlucky, but he’s a great guy, and I want to send him my best wishes and hope he succeeds because if he does well, we will see the real Super Eagles. Let’s pray for him to succeed,” the former Everton striker said as per Soccernet.

“Listen, it’s not easy coaching the Nigerian National Team, and that is the first thing you must know. I like George because he was an unbelievable player...so being a Nigerian, I’m happy he got the role,” he added.
