American heavyweight boxer Deontay Wilder believes that a fight with Anthony Joshua could still be on the cards.

Wilder, who makes his return to the ring on Saturday, October 15 to take on Robert Helenius in New York, believes a fight with the two-time heavyweight champion is the number one bout the world is looking forward to.

The 36-year-old added that he would love to fight AJ in Africa where the two boxers have their roots.

“I would love to do that fight in Africa,” Wilder told BBC Sport.

“It’s still the number one fight in the world for everyone. Everywhere I go, people always talk about me versus Joshua.”

“We both have roots from there,” Wilder explained.

“I think it would be an amazing place to have it, to go back home. To go back to the motherland. A continent full of our people. I can just see that being an amazing fight, win, lose or draw.

“I think we’ll get the respect and love from all the people over there.”

Both Joshua and Wilder have roots in Nigeria. Anthony Joshua was born to a Nigerian mother and his roots can be traced to the Yoruba people.

Wilder on the other hand has his ancestry in Edo State

Africa has witnessed many classical bouts including Muhammad Ali's fight with George Foreman in Kinshasa in 1974.
