Former Nigeria head coach Sunday Oliseh has attributed the Super Eagles’ struggles to a lack of quality in the current crop of players.

Oliseh made the remarks in a recent interview on the Play Zone podcast, which has since gone viral on social media.

According to the former midfielder, it is a shame that many people fail to acknowledge that the current Nigeria team lacks top players compared to previous eras.

The former Juventus midfielder compared today’s squad to earlier generations, when Nigerian stars featured regularly for top European clubs. He named Finidi George and himself at Ajax and Taribo West at Inter Milan, among others who featured in the Champions League week in, week out.

Oliseh described Victor Osimhen as the standout figure in the current squad, but added that Galatasaray plays in a league outside Europe’s top five.

“The reason we’re failing is that the players are not good enough. We don’t have good players,” Oliseh said.

“Which of the Nigerian players in the national team now is playing at a team that starts this season to aspire to win the Conference League?” he asked.

“I’m not even going to the Champions League or UEFA. Conference League, which is the smallest European title.”
